Science from the Start and the EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework (used in all formal pre-school education settings) has three prime areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

and four specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Science broadly falls within ‘Understanding the World’ and all Science from the Start activities link with this area. They also link with some or all of the other areas too.

For example, each activity is parent/carer led; this interaction helps with Communication and Language and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Some activities will also encourage development of, for example, motor skills (Physical Development), Mathematics (e.g. thinking about shapes, numbers, size), awareness of textures (Expressive Arts and Design) and learning new words (Literacy).

Information about how activities link with the EYFS isn’t usually displayed at events as that could lead to information overload – but if you ever want to know about this, please just ask!
